How to start your settlement in Manor Lords? Guide to first buildings and early game upgrades

Manor Lords is a new medieval city builder set in the XIV century and made by a single developer, Slavic Magic, that quickly became quite a hit on Steam. If you just bought this game and have no idea what to do, this basic guide is for you.

How to start running your settlement?

First of all, note that most of the actions are done automatically. Your families will do most of the required things on their own. If you want to speed up the process, assign the dwellers to a specific structure, or increase priority speed with arrows in the construction menu.

What to build first?

You will need free families to build something. Get a reliable food income. In the early game, the easiest way to obtain provision is to set up Forager Hut and Hunting Camp. Assign families to them to get a constant inflow of resources.

Your first obstacle to progress will be planks and the general amount of timber. So start by setting up Logging Camps, and once they're done, move to Sawpit and Woodcutter's Lodge. Meanwhile, begin construction of Burgage Plots. Keep all the woodwork close to each other and near a dense forest. Connect your infrastructure with roads. They cost nothing but increase the speed of workers.

Starting building priorities

  • Hitching post (Build near woodworks and buy one more ox)
  • Logging Camp x2
  • Forager Hut and/or Hunting Camp (produce food)
  • Woodcutter's lodge (produces fuel)
  • Start Burgage Plots
  • Set marketplace (doesn't cost resources)
  • Sawpit (produces planks from timber)

Once Burgage Plots are built, you will have your first major settlement upgrade and receive the first development point. They unlock various resources and upgrades. Make sure your families aren't still homeless, as there's a common bug when workers don't inhabit free houses.

Fixing your population.

Grow your population by getting more Approval. When you click on Burgage Plots, you will see what they require for family upgrades. These factors will also affect early Approval.

Once the basic constructions are done, check the left top menu bar to see what resources you need the most. Reassign families to maintain high numbers, as they tend to deplete sooner when you set additional buildings.
