What we know about Valorant next agent 21 "Mage": leaked abilities, name, role, release date

Valorant's next agent 21, "Mage," got the first details revealed recently. His possible name can be Varun Batra, suggesting he is a male character from India. Inside-Twitter ValorLeaks described the character's abilities, provided with an in-game screenshot.

So far, there is not much information about the release date, role, or appearance, but we will gather all the rumors about the next character to keep you updated.

Mage's possible abilities

Riot revealed new information in a blog post dedicated to hero balancing. Agent 21 will be a controller with the skills aimed to cover a large portion of the map. They compared the character to Astra and Viper. His abilities are supposedly water-based, and there are a few hints to it. The teaser message had multiple water-related terms.

As the game has evolved with shifting metas, new maps, and an increase in general game knowledge, we’re always identifying potential new opportunities for Agents 12–14 months ahead of time. We have seen that Controllers are in a bit of a drought, and it feels like we have to go all the way back to ancient times to our last new Controller release with Astra. Aside from Viper, introducing Controllers that can cover large open areas is a blue ocean of opportunity.

We’ve let this soak long enough, and Agent 21 is almost ready to go out. I don’t want to flood you with too much information in this blurb here, so I’ll hold off on saying much more.

Important edit: the following description was denounced as fake by its supposed author. He revealed this in a Reddit thread.

Mage will have some kind of flashing device, an AoE damage ability, and a bullet-proof bubble. His ultimate will supposedly heal all the teammates while decaying the enemies at the same time. It is worth noting that this is not the final stage of development. The abilities might receive some reworks and twists before Mage's official arrival.

  • Bubble (E): EQUIP bubble and enter into a phased state to place down a bubble by pressing the ability key. Activate to create an impenetrable bubble. Bullets cannot pass through.
  • Tartarus Pit (Q): EQUIP a Tartarus charger. FIRE to launch a shot that deals some damage and slows players within the zone.
  • Vision Taker (C): EQUIP a distortion wall launcher. FIRE to create a small line of distortion. Enemies will get briefly blinded if they walk through.
  • Golem (X): EQUIP the Golem doll. Fire to throw down. All teammates will get a regeneration buff, and enemies will get decay debuff.

Mage's name and gender speculation

The name Mage is most likely a placeholder. In patches 5.03 and 5.04, Riot Games revealed some messages mentioning Varun Batra. It sounds like an Indian name, and Fade also refers to the character as "he." An answer by Captain Greaves tells the story of Batra stealing a priceless artifact from REALM.

Agent 21 is from India, that's the one thing we can be sure of. The teaser picture by Riot reveals a book with a map of the country. It also has a message in Hindi, and the file is named "Samosa Chaat," which is a popular local food. Also, Varun Batra is certainly an Indian name. Interestingly enough, Varuna is the god of oceans in Hinduism.

Release Date

In September 13 update, Riot stated that "Agent 21 is almost ready to go out." His release date at this point can only be speculated. We can assume that Mage will arrive with Episode 5 Act 3 on October 18.
