Ceb on Immortal Draft update: "I don't know if that's the best change but I understand Valve's idea. And that idea is correct"
2025-03-21 16:26:00Sebastien "Ceb" Debs reacted to the massive changes to the access to the Immortal Draft matchmaking replays in Dota 2. The OG co-founder believes Valve's implementation of the update is "brutal" but he likes the idea behind it. Ceb shared his opinion on stream.
It's actually kind of crazy. I think there's gotta be a big selection of players. Basically, there has been this effect on Dota 2 over the last years. Every replay is essentially available, and the patches last for a long time. The result of this is that everybody catches up to best practices. Because everyone has all the information and the data to break it down: They can spend as long as they want watching player perspectives, replays, and different situations in games. And the patch lasts forever to practice. Essentially, everyone becomes good, provided they have the talent, of course.
But this change will tear things apart. Now, players don't have access to what others do. They need to get creative and be smart about what's happening and why pros do what they do in specific games. I guess the tournament replays will be available and we're talking about public games.
I think it's a good change. Maybe it's a bit too brutal, in the way Valve did it: Just, boom, overnight they just shoot everything. But I think it's for the better. I don't know if that's the best change but I understand the idea for why Valve did it. And that idea is correct.

The patch of March 19 closed the replays and APIs of the high-MMR games for everyone but the involved players. The only way to watch ranked matches above 8.5k MMR is to see them live. Data services like Dota2ProTracker suffered the most, as their primary content was covering these kinds of games. Based on the online reactions, the professional community leans towards a positive perception. For casual players the biggest part is that won't gain easy access to pro player builds now.
