Fans compare Dota 2 and League of Legends balance by hero pools at EWC 2024

On a rare occasion, Dota 2 and League of Legends competitions became part of Esports World Cup 2024. Fans created a Reddit thread to compare the hero balance between the two games. In Valve's game tournament, Riyadh Masters 2024, only 14 characters weren't picked or banned, while in LoL, this number was 98.

Some comments pointed out that League has more characters: 168 champions against 124 heroes in Dota 2. There were many differences between these events. EWC 2024 featured 8 teams and only 7 matches. Riyadh Masters had 20 teams and over 100 series. Also, in Dota 2, opponents ban 14 characters per game instead of 10.

However, checking the biggest events of 2023, The International and Worlds, the number of games is closer, but the difference is pretty much the same: 4 unpicked & unbanned heroes in Dota 2 against 75 in LoL.

There's always been a rivalry between these MOBAs. Both originate from the DotA Allstars Warcraft 3 mod, made by former developers. LoL provided a new take on the game. Valve's title recreates the original mechanics but with new names and appearances. Their philosophy also differs: the former is more focused on skill, while the latter greatly depends on strategy.
