Heroes of Newerth permanently shuts down. Dota 2 and LoL players pay their tributes

Heroes of Newerth (HoN) is closing its servers on June 20, 2022, after more than a decade. It was announced in December on the game's social account. Dota 2 TI5 champion Peter "ppd" Dager, former Team 8 and Immortals LoL player Kang "Dodo" Jun-hyeok, and other esports personalities commented on the sad news.

Based on Warcraft III mode DotA Allstars, HoN launched in May 2010. Unlike League of Legends, the game copied DotA heroes and mechanics, being more of a modern-looking remake at first. Later, HoN started adding its own characters and ideas. Eventually, the game didn't survive the competition with Dota 2 and MOBA market growth.

In terms of esports, HoN had the biggest impact on Dota 2. Two-time TI champions N0tail and JerAx, their former OG teammates MoonMeander and Fly, as well as many others, started their professional run or competed in HoN at some point.

For fans, Dota 2 is now the most viable option. Also, an enthusiast started a transition mod, Heroes of NewDota. It is available on Steam Workshop and playable through the "Arcade" section in Dota 2.
