Gambit might sell its CS:GO roster, but right now this is a pointless affair

The biggest rumor of the week in esports came from Alexey "OverDrive" Biriykov, a Russian insider. According to his sources, Gambit Esports has started looking for buyers for its CS:GO roster, one of the best teams in the world at the moment. WePlay Esports caster Igor "SL4M" Sopov also indirectly confirmed his claim.

Yeah, I've heard about the Gambit roster. I think that should also sell the team, but I'm not sure if anyone will want to buy at this moment. The main question is the price and the possible discounts, considering the situation. I can only wish for players to find a new home either way!

The rumor seems realistic at the first glance:

  • The team is forced to compete under a neutral tag on ESL tournaments. BLAST events are completely unavailable.
  • According to the Ukrainian talent Vitaliy "v1lat" Volochai, most sponsors have dropped contracts with the organization. The only companies that still work with Gambit are Herbalife and Russian bookmaker "Liga Stavok".
  • The ream currently is in second place in the HLTV rating, but it might lose its place if players miss tournaments due to visa issues and org restrictions. It will most likely lead to a price reduction. If the organization is having financial issues, it's better to sell the roster now.

But it also might be that Overdrive's information is not true. He published some seemingly huge stories on the Gambit roster before. For example, in August of 2021, he claimed that Complexity and Cloud9 are in talks with Gambit coach Konstantin "groove" Pikiner, who is also working as a sports director of the club.

Needless to say that even if these talks took place, nothing came out of it. Groove is still working with Gambit, and Cloud9 is still nowhere to be seen in CS:GO after its colossal failure.

There is no point for Gambit of selling the roster right now

Yes, the team will play at ESL Pro League S15 under a neutral tag Players with no sponsors. But the RMR tournament starts right after that, and in May there will be a PGL Major Antwerp 2022. Valve is one of the few companies that didn't forbid Russian organizations to play under their tags. So it seems that if players will qualify, they will participate in the Major as Gambit with their sponsors' branding.

Qualifying for the Major will bring a lot of money to the org. The tournament has a million-dollar prize pool, and besides that, Gambit will get profits from team stickers while players will get money from autographs as well. According to Anonymo owner, this time they just have to qualify.

In any case, Gambut should wait for at least 2 months. The second-best team in the world most likely will qualify for the major and earn sticker money for the organization. And if they get to the playoff, the roster's value will only grow.

Interz: "It was difficult to find pracs for our team after Katowice."

Our sources also claim that OverDrive's inside isn't fully accurate. Gambit is indeed getting offers and considering them, but the organization is not planning to sell the roster at this moment.

On the other hand, in the current situation, it's impossible to know what the future holds. It is plausible that Gambit will sell the roster in case of getting a very attractive offer if players are OK with it. And Valve might change its mind at any point as well.
